Trump goes off script with an emotional story about his brother

President Donald Trump Thursday delivered a touching speech about the opioid crisis the U.S. is struggling with. After Melania Trump’s speech, he took the stage and said, “as Americans, we cannot allow this to continue.”

“It is time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction. … We can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic. We can do it,” Trump said.

But then, Trump shared a personal story about his brother, Fred.

The president said:

“I had a brother, Fred, great guy. … The best personality. Much better than mine. But he had a problem. He had a problem with alcohol. And he would tell me, ‘Don’t drink. Don’t drink.’ He wasn’t substantially older, and I listened to him. […]

But he would constantly tell me, ‘Don’t drink.’ He would also add, ‘Don’t smoke.’ But he would say it over and over and over again, and to this day, I’ve never had a drink. And I have no longing for it. I have no interest in it to this day. I have never had a cigarette.”

Trump continued with pointing out the importance of teaching young people and people generally to avoid drugs:

“The fact is if we can teach young people and people generally not to start, it’s really, really easy not to take them up. And I think that is going to end up being our most important thing. Really tough, really big, really great advertising. So we get to people before they start so they don’t have to go through the problems of what people are going through.”
