California and New York attorneys general will sue the Trump administration if that means securing health-care subsidies that President Trump said he would cut, according to The Hill.
Hundreds of thousands of families in New York are dependant on the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies for their healthcare, said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat.
“I will not allow President Trump to once again use New York families as political pawns in his dangerous, partisan campaign to eviscerate the Affordable Care Act at any cost,” Schneiderman said in a statement.
“Again and again, President Trump has threatened to cut off these subsidies to undermine our heathcare system and force Congress to the negotiating table. That’s unacceptable.”
Schneiderman said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and 16 other attorneys general would follow his example and oppose the White House’s intention of cutting subsidies to Obamacare.
“Our coalition of states stands ready to sue if President Trump cuts them off.”
Schneiderman said he will not allow the President to use New York families as “political pawns in his dangerous, partisan campaign to eviscerate the Affordable Care Act at any cost.”
“This summer, the courts granted our intervention to defend these vital subsidies and the quality, affordable health care they ensure for millions of families across the country,” Schneiderman said.

California AG Xavier Becerra, also a Democrat, wrote on Twitter that he is “prepared to sue the #Trump Administration to protect #health subsidies, just as when we successfully intervened in #HousevPrice!”

This is the Trump administration’s most serious action against Obamacare yet, following the GOP’s failed efforts to rescind Obamacare in the Senate.
Trump sparked controversy when he announced his decision Friday, with the Democratic base asserting that this will “break” insurance markets and Trump inviting Democratic leaders to the negotiating table to amend ACA if they feel worried.
“The Democrats ObamaCare is imploding. Massive subsidy payments to their pet insurance companies has stopped. Dems should call me to fix!” Trump tweeted early on Friday morning.
