After President Donald Trump announced his official decision to end the DACA program, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer went for a head on attack on the president, calling his decision “heartless.” And despite receiving cheers and praise from his colleagues, a message has surfaced from 2009, showing Schumer with a whole another opinion on illegal immigration.
According to the video, Schumer repeatedly argued during a speech at the Immigration Law & Policy Conference at Georgetown Law, that immigration reform should focus mainly on encouraging legal immigration and should make clear that “illegal immigration is wrong” (at 01:55).
Schumer also went on to explain that the “American people are fundamentally pro-legal immigration and anti-illegal immigration” adding that they will only pass “comprehensive reform when we recognize this fundamental concept.”
So the question now is why has Schumer changed his opinion vastly now that President Trump is fighting for the very things he urged for during his conference.
For starters, he declared that “illegal immigration is wrong,” before adding that “a primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration.” A video of Obama speaking out a similar stance and take on immigration surfaced just few days ago, but despite their past views, it seems that these politicians are ready to take down Trump for being able to accomplish what they couldn’t.
