Brown took more than $800,000 from the scholarship charity and spent the money on vacations, luxury stuff and tickets to a Beyonce’s concert
She partied with Nancy Pelosi, traveled on Air Force one next to President Obama, and campaigned for Hillary Clinton. But today Corrine Brown must defend against charges that she stole money from a charity foundation for poor children.
Corrupt Florida Democrat Corrine Brown was caught in a huge scandal. She was arrested a few weeks ago, and if convicted on all 24 counts, she faces 357 years in prison and $4.8 million in fines.
Federal attorneys opened their case against her on Wednesday and things have already gotten very interesting.
Bizpac Review reported that prosecutors say Brown funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars from from the scholarship charity she started “One Door for Education” into her own pocket. She spent the money on vacations, luxury goods and concert tickets. Corrine Brown was the Democratic representative for Florida’s 5thcongressional district in the period between 2013 and 2017.
In his opening statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney A. Tysen Duva explained that Brown and two of her affiliates took more than $800,000, much of which they transferred to their personal bank accounts, between 2012 and 2016. The trio allegedly spent this money on vacations, luxury stuff and tickets to a Beyonce’s concert.
“She knew exactly how to lie to these donors, and knew exactly where the cash money was going,” Assistant U.S. Attorney A. Tysen Duva said.
Brown’s defense team have claimed that she had no idea what was going on and that their aging client was swindled by her former chief of staff, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons. Defense counsel James Smith told jurors that she did not even know how to text or email, meaning she could not have been responsible for generating the emails cited by the prosecution as evidence of collusion.
However, it seems that nobody is buying this.
