A federal judge in Virginia ruled yesterday that President Donald Trump’s executive order that temporarily bans travel from six Muslim-majority countries is legal.
The decision against the injunction comes after federal judges in Maryland and Hawaii blocked the implementation of Trump’s executive order nationwide.
Judge Anthony Trenga of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia said in his 32-page ruling that Trump was legally allowed to ban travel from those specific countries and that it was not discriminatory toward Muslims, as many would believe.
The injunction against it was put forward by Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour. She was represented by an attorney from the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Trenga wrote in his opinion that “the President has unqualified authority to bar physical entry to the United States at the border.” He also said that the executive order does not mention religion and has a “state secular purpose” of protecting U.S. citizens from terrorist attacks.
According to the Daily Caller, a Department of Justice spokesperson said in a statement, “The Department of Justice is pleased with the ruling. As the Court correctly explains, the President’s Executive Order falls well within his authority to safeguard the nation’s security.”
There were a number of Muslim-majority states that were not mentioned in the executive order. So, this is not a Muslim ban after all, it is just that the fake news media called it that.
