Michelle Obama surprising people on Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show”

First lady Michelle Obama was Jimmy Fallon’s sole guest on Wednesday’s edition of “The Tonight Show,” where she cheerfully bid farewell to eight years in the White House and surprised thankful Americans leaving her emotional farewell messages (video at the bottom).

Michelle Obama said her last days in the White House have been surprising emotional.

The first lady – who considered not moving to Washington when her husband was first elected president in 2008 because she did not care for the attention that came with the role – told Jimmy Fallon that her emotions were unexpected.

“It is nuts,” Michelle said on “The Tonight Show” Wednesday. “I feel like crying right now and I didn’t think it was going to be that emotional. It has been super emotional for all of us in ways that we didn’t expect.”

She cried during her final public remarks at the White House.

“Talking about kids. Kids are my heart,” she said. “When I think about the fact that some of them are afraid of the future, of what is to come. I don’t want them to be afraid. I want them to embrace the future and know that the world is getting better. We have bumps in the road. We have ups and downs but I want our kids to move forward – I don’t care where they come – from with strength and with hope.” (RELATED: Michelle Obama: ‘Diversity Is Not A Threat To Who We Are’)

Obama said she wants to make the transition as smooth as possible for Donald and Melania Trump.

“Democracy is not about party,” she said. “We’re all trying to get stuff done, and we’ve seen that decency and were trying to emulate that decency, so were going to be supportive to the Trump administration as much as we can.”

But she did add that she didn’t want Trump to get rid of her school lunch initiatives.

“I hope [the school lunch program] does not get touched because that makes sense, so we have to keep doing things that make sense for our future. I’m not done. I’m too young. I’m too young to stop. We’ve made plans for the continuation of all that we’re doing. I will continue to stay involved with these issues as long as I live.”
